About American Mahjong

What is American Mahjong?

American Mahjong is a four-player tile game that developed its own rules in the United States in the early twentieth century. It is known for jokers, the Charleston (a tile-passing ritual before each hand), and an annual card of winning hands published by the National Mah Jongg League.

How many tiles are in an American Mahjong set?

A set for American Mahjong has 152 tiles: 108 suit tiles (Bams, Craks, and Dots), 16 Winds, 12 Dragons, 8 Flowers, and 8 Jokers. Some sets include extras, such as spare jokers or blank tiles.

Do I need the National Mah Jongg League card?

Most groups play from the current card, which lists that year’s winning hands and changes every year. Each player needs their own copy, which is ordered directly from the National Mah Jongg League.

How many people play?

The standard game is played by four people. Many groups have variations for three or even two players, and five players can share a table by taking turns sitting out a game.

Is American Mahjong hard to learn?

It looks more complicated than it is. Most new players feel comfortable after a few practice hands with an experienced friend. Our step-by-step guide to playing American Mahjong is a good place to start.
